This area of the South Downs is full of history just waiting to be discovered, from the grove of ancient yew trees at Kingley Vale, among the oldest living things in Britain, to the Chichester’s Norman cathedral and the magnificent treasure house of Goodwood and the Goodwood sporting estate.
Unspoilt countryside includes the rare chalk grasslands of Levin Down and Harting Down, home to many wildflowers and butterflies, and there is a beautiful coastline to explore just a few miles from the South Downs.
In quiet, secluded villages you’ll come across stylish gastro pubs and outstanding restaurants, and Chichester is an important centre for the arts, with the acclaimed Chichester Festival Theatre, modern art at Pallant House Gallery (re-opens with a new extension in July 2006) and exciting summer festivals.
