Discover Cuckmere Valley – the South Downs hidden gem

Part of the Seven Sisters National trust park, Cuckmere Valley is the perfect destination for those that love adventure. With excellent views of the Cuckmere River, and mile upon mile of natural beauty to discover, the Cuckmere Valley is definitely a must-visit location.

Whether you want to simply take in the scenery, or make the most of the fresh air and partake in some exercise, Cuckmere Valley has something to offer. Here are some of our top suggestions for things to do here.

1) Hiking or cycling

Cuckmere valley offers some of the best South Downs walks. You can follow the river to where it meets the sea, spending some time relaxing and unwinding on the beach, or follow the National Trust’s Frog Firle Farm route. The Frog Firle Farm route guides you through the chalk grasslands, which are full of bright flowers and friendly wildlife, including Canada Geese. As you amble through farmland, you’ll also come across the village of Litlington. If you need a break, why not visit one of Litlington’s many pubs or eateries? We’d recommend the Plough and Harrow Gastropub for fresh, delicious and traditional British meals!

There is nothing like cycling in the South Downs – with the stunning views acting as the perfect backdrop to your workout. Even better, the variation of hills and grassland prove to be challenging for those who are looking to up their game. Cycle-friendly routes have been specially designed throughout the valley, taking you through forests, villages and along the riverside. There are plenty of places you can hire bikes from, too.

2) Canoeing

Fancy some water sports? Cuckmere Valley is the perfect location to try your hand at canoeing or kayaking. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced kayaker, you’re sure to have fun as you explore the valley from the river. Take in new sights, try something new and satisfy your taste for adventure all at the same time!

3) Visit the beach

Cuckmere Haven is a beach like no other. Looking almost like a painting or a postcard, the river-facing beach is simply stunning. Whether you take a dip in the water, explore the shoreline or take in the brilliant views of the cliffs and grasslands, you simply must visit Cuckmere Haven during your visit to the South Downs. After a day of fun on the beach, be sure to pop by one of the many nearby restaurants for a bite to eat!

We are a non-profit organisation, promoting the South Downs National Park and surrounding areas as the destination of choice for domestic and international visitors.
