Here we’ve selected five great places to visit in the South Downs with your furry best mate, but there are plenty more.

Claydon, South Downs National Park

By taking a trip to Claydon, you’ll stumble upon Jill Windmill. It’s a fabulous, fully restored, 19th-century working corn windmill, which you and your dog can happily explore together.

Brighton

Brighton is one of the most dog-friendly places to visit in the UK. Apart from its well-known pebble beach, Brighton is a bustling seaside town, with a plethora of shops along the seafront and the back lanes to browse with your dog. For a real treat, go to the Metrodeco for afternoon tea. It’s a 1930s tea salon renown for being Brighton’s most pooch-friendly cafe.

Dyke Valley

Take a short five-mile drive north of Brighton and you’ll find a famous beauty spot called Dyke Valley. It’s the widest and driest valley in the UK and offers breathtaking views. On a sunny day, there’s plenty of exploring to do here, with lots of little footpaths to meander. Find out more here.

Do something a little different with your pet pooch…

… by hopping aboard a train on The Mid Hants Railway Watercress Line, that takes you right into the heart of the countryside! You’ll stop at four delightful little train stations including Ropley, famous for appearing in the first ‘Harry Potter’ film. Dogs travel for free with a ‘Rover’ ticket. For train times, visit www.watercressline.co.uk.

Visit Amberley Museum

For a spot of educational activity, head to Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre. It’s set in 36 acres and dogs on leads are welcome throughout the museum. There’s also a dog-friendly train and bus that can take you around the grounds, so you can explore as much, or as little as you want to.
