3 fun things to do with family in Petersfield

From picturesque green valleys to mesmerising coastal beaches, the idyllic town of Petersfield is home to some of the most charming attractions around South Downs. The town is beloved for its ancient roots and musical flair and is often visited by families looking for their next exciting holiday getaway.

Petersfield started out as a thriving historic market town, and much of its economy still relies on its flourishing markets. The town also enjoys tourist trade in plenty, from seasoned globe trotters to local families attracted to the area’s vibrant and captivating surroundings. Stir in a handful of museums, sandy beaches and classy restaurants scattered all around, and you’ll never be short of fun things to do here with your loved ones.

1. Visit the market

The main square in Petersfield is erratically beautiful – it’s large and utterly photogenic, but most important of all, it’s where you’ll find the town’s famous market place. The market is open twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays, drawing in all kinds of excited travellers on the lookout for new experiences and the freshest produce.

And if you happen to visit on the weekend, you’ll be certain to pick up on some of the action happening in the Farmer’s Market. This market opens on the first Sunday of every month and attracts countless bargain hunters living far away from the town. Some of the most popular products you can find here include Lyburn Farmhouse Cheesemakers, Hambledon Wineries and Beechcroft Lamb, Beef & Pork.

2. Unwind in vast open spaces

Petersfield is one of the loveliest towns in the South Downs National Park and comes with endless seas of beautiful natural spaces. Visit the Queen Elizabeth Country Park for a soulful walk in the embrace of nature’s finest. The park stretches over two thousand acres of open woodland with plenty of jaw-dropping vistas to appreciate. You can choose from several long and short trails to go walking, and children over eight can take part in the Adventure Play Trail here. And if your little ones are just too little to go traipsing around in the great outdoors, you can take them to the Tots Play Area which is near the Visitor Centre.

3. Lounge in soft golden sands

Complete your stay in Petersfield with a trip to the stunning West Wittering Beach. Boasting smooth golden sands and tantalizing blue waters, this is an ideal spot to bond with your family over ice cream and a good old sandcastle. The beach is a holder of the Blue Flag Award for cleanliness and safety, and is the perfect place for your kids to enjoy some sun and sand.
