Maybe something a little more relaxing is your thing? How about wandering around and experiencing the place where Jane Austen lived and wrote, the rooms she would have come up with her ideas, the garden she would have sat in whilst they flourished and turned into great Novels including Pride and Prejudice. The house is full of her and her family’s treasures for you to see. It has been open for over 70 years now and has welcomed over a million visitors due to the fact it has become one of the most love literary sites.
If you do enjoy a museum and even more so have an interest in the military a visit to Winchester wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Winchester’s Military Quarter. It is a wonderfully unique site in the fact that there is actually 6 Museums all in one place! Each museum is different and has its own amazing artefacts to show off!! Medals, Paintings, military objects are just a few things you would get to see, based on a Victorian Site the 6 museums are nicely placed together allowing you to go from one to another. Some of them are free but some have a small cost however if you wanted to visit them all there are joint tickets available, to top it all off there is a café for a nice cuppa and cake
Looking for something a bit different, a chance to see the sights? Maybe this is what you’re after. The Watercress line is one of the most successful heritage railways in the country, running some beautiful steam powered locomotives! An amazing Hop on, Hop off service is available that allows you to visit all 4 stops along the line, giving you a great opportunity to not only watch the trains come in but enjoy the great cafes and stations that all have lots to explore, you could also go exploring the villages themselves. Take a look through their site for more details on each of the stops.
We know we said this was a top 5, however, this one is maybe slightly further afield so isn’t quite under the days out in Winchester category but still one that is definitely worth a mention particularly to those looking for a day out with the kids. So, here’s number 6…
A full day out with Animals galore, including giraffes, Tigers and Penguins. There are adventure playgrounds, a train, daily talks and feeds. It is definitely a magical day out for the whole family! One you won’t forget in a while. The zoo is actually a charity and the company that owns it does conservation work both here and in Africa. The site is 140 Acres so is a fab day out to make sure the kiddies are nicely worn out for a chilled-out evening.
Hope you all have a great time exploring Winchester (and the surrounding areas) and find plenty of things to keep you and your fellow travellers busy.
