5 stunning places to enjoy a South Downs cream tea

There’s nothing quite so quintessentially English as a cream tea and the South Downs boasts some glorious eateries in which to indulge yourself.

In the South Downs, cream tea traditionally serves up scones layered with clotted cream and jam, sweat treats, cakes and finger sandwiches, all washed down with a pot of tea or something a little stronger if it takes your fancy. Here’s five of the best to explore.

Claremont Hotel, Eastbourne

The Claremont Hotel is a beautiful Victorian building perched on Eastbourne’s seafront. The hotel boasts many original features and was fully refurbished in 2013. Enjoy an afternoon treat amidst the crisp white tablecloths and classic splendour. Choose from the hotel’s vintage afternoon tea or cream tea. The hotel is only open to adults.

Lainston House, Winchester

Winchester boasts several exceptional hostelries at which to indulge in a cream tea, but Lainston House is one of the finest. This elegant 17th century country house is set in over 60 acres of grounds just 10 minutes outside of Winchester itself. Afternoon tea is served in either the Drawing Room or the Avenue Restaurant.

Amberley Castle, Amberley

Amberley Castle is recorded in the Doomsday Book and is situated in the beautiful West Sussex countryside. The castle was built in the 12th Century and was used as a fortress by the bishops of Chichester. Choose from a full afternoon tea or indulge yourself in a champagne afternoon tea for something that extra bit special.

Wayfield Park Farm Shop, Pyecombe

For something a little more rustic, Wayfield Park Farm fits the bill nicely in the village of Pyecombe. All of the ingredients served come from the farm shop and everything is cooked to order with homemade cakes and delicious treats. The farm itself is one of only two Sussex beef herds remaining in the county.

The Shelleys Hotel, Lewes

Served in the hotel’s lounge or al fresco on the terrace, a cream tea at the Shelleys Hotel is a delicious way to spend your afternoon in this beautiful town. The Shelleys is a stunning country house hotel which boasts an a la carte restaurant and lovely gardens. Set just off the high street, it boasts a sumptuous afternoon tea menu.
